Qualcomm and MediaTek both shipped their 2024-cycle flagship SoCs in late 2023: the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 (built on TSMC 4nm N4P) and the Dimensity 9300 (also TSMC 4nm N4P). Almost every Android flagship released in 2024 runs one of these two, and a year on, we have enough field data to talk about how they actually compare under real workloads — not just synthetic benchmarks.
The architectural split
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 keeps the conventional 1+5+2 layout: one prime Cortex-X4 at 3.3 GHz, five performance cores at up to 3.2 GHz, two efficiency Cortex-A520 at 2.3 GHz. It's evolutionary — the same design language as the 8 Gen 2 with refined tuning.
MediaTek went radical with the Dimensity 9300. They dropped little cores entirely: one Cortex-X4 prime at 3.25 GHz, three more X4 cores at 2.85 GHz, and four Cortex-A720 cores at 2.0 GHz. No A520s, no efficiency cluster. This is the first mainstream all-big-core mobile SoC, and it's a big bet — on raw burst performance over efficiency.
Synthetic benchmarks: roughly even
Geekbench 6 single-core, AnTuTu 10, 3DMark Wild Life Extreme — the two are within ~5% on almost every test, with the Dimensity 9300 pulling ahead on multi-core (because 8 big cores beat 6) and the Snapdragon edging it on GPU stress tests (Adreno 750 vs Mali-Immortalis-G720).
If you stop reading at synthetics, you'd call it a tie. But that's not the whole story.
Sustained gaming: Snapdragon
Synthetic benchmarks run for 30 seconds. Real games run for 30 minutes. Here the difference is stark:
- Genshin Impact at max settings, 60 fps target: Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 phones hold 55-58 fps after 20 minutes. Dimensity 9300 phones drop to 38-45 fps as thermal throttling kicks in.
- PUBG Mobile, 120 Hz mode: Both stay locked at 120 fps for the first 10 minutes. Dimensity throttles to 90 fps around minute 15-20. Snapdragon holds longer.
The reason is obvious in hindsight: eight big cores draw more power than four big + four little. On a vapor-chamber flagship phone, this is manageable. On a thinner phone, the Dimensity 9300 gets toasty fast.
AI inference: depends on the model
Both chips claim "70B-parameter on-device LLM" support, but in practice this means quantized 7B models running with heavy memory pressure. Real-world numbers we've measured:
- Llama 3 8B (4-bit quantized): Snapdragon hits ~15 tokens/sec, Dimensity ~17 tokens/sec.
- Stable Diffusion 1.5 image generation: Both around 2-3 seconds per image at 512×512.
- On-device speech-to-text (Whisper Tiny): Effectively identical, ~0.4× real-time.
Dimensity's all-big-core design does win at peak AI throughput — which is exactly the workload it was tuned for. Snapdragon wins on power-efficient AI (transcription, on-the-fly translation), where the little cores carry the long tail of small ops.
Battery life: Snapdragon, comfortably
This is the cost of the all-big-core gamble. In our daily-use logs (mixed messaging, browsing, video, occasional gaming on identical 5000 mAh phones), Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 phones average 7-8 hours of screen-on time. Dimensity 9300 phones land closer to 5.5-6.5 hours.
If you charge nightly and don't game heavily, this won't bother you. If you travel or work long days unplugged, it adds up.
The hardware fingerprint check
If you're buying a flagship Android phone in 2026 and the seller claims it's "Snapdragon 8 Gen 3," verify these fields before paying:

We've seen counterfeits in Chinese markets sell as "Snapdragon 8 Gen 3" with the SOC_MODEL reading MT6769 (a 2019 mid-range MediaTek). Don't just trust the box.
Which should you buy?
Pick a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 phone if:
- You game for more than 30 minutes at a time.
- Battery life on a single charge matters.
- You want broad app-store / DRM support (Snapdragon has the longer track record).
Pick a Dimensity 9300 phone if:
- You want maximum bench scores and short-burst AI performance.
- You're price-sensitive (Dimensity flagships typically run $80-150 cheaper).
- You don't mind charging more than once a day.
TL;DR
